TR-FLEX Cyclotron

The TR-Flex is a further development of the proven TR-24 cyclotron platform. It is a truly unique particle accelerator. It combines the energy and power of a commercial 30 MeV cyclotron in the form of a typical PET cyclotron.

COMPACT,
POWERFUL AND VERSATILE

Since the commissioning of the first TR-Flex cyclotron at the Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research Center at Helmholtz-Zentrum, Dresden-Rossendorf in 2017, the TR-Flex design has received several upgrades. With a variable energy range from 12 MeV to 30 MeV and a beam current up to 800 μA, the TR-Flex has become the most versatile and productive cyclotron in the world. It is also the most compact, non-superconducting, 30 MeV cyclotron ever built.

Features of the TR-FLEX

Variable and widest energy range

With extracted beam energy ranging from 12 to 30 MeV, the TR-FLEX is ideally suited for production of practically all medical radioisotopes, from Zr-89 nad Cu-64 to Ge-68 and Mo-99.

Highest beam current and highest output

When it comes to beam current and production capacity, the TR-Flex is available in several modifications starting from 300 μA all the way up to 800 μA, making it a small but very powerful machine that generates more beam current than any of the commercially available target systems can handle.

Small and cost effective

The TR-Flex magnet measures 1.7m x 1.7m x 1.1m and weighs only 24 tons. This is the lightest and most compact 30 MeV cyclotron. The efficiency of the TR-Flex translates into the smallest foot-print and low cost of the cyclotron vault housing this cyclotron.

A complete line of fully integrated solid, liquid and gas targets

ACSI can provide a wide variety of PET and SPECT targets that are compatible with the TR-FLEX beam power and energy. Fully integrated beamlines and automated transfer systems for both PET and SPECT radionuclides are available in standard and custom configurations. Up to 6 beamlines can be installed on the TR-FLEX cyclotron.

Big Solution,
Small Footprint

The TR-FLEX not only provides significant savings in the cost of capital equipment; it also allows for a much smaller footprint compared with standard 30 MeV cyclotrons. As a result, the investment required for construction of the whole facility, including real state costs are significantly lower.

Without beam lines the TR-Flex can can be installed in a 5m x 6m vault.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between TR-24 and TR-FLEX cyclotrons?

The TR-Flex cyclotron is built on the TR-24 platform, but it has an extended beam energy range, from 12 MeV to 30 MeV, compared to 15 MeV to 25 MeV for the TR-24. The high current model of the TR-Flex cyclotron can operate at a higher current, up to 1000 µA beam, offering a much wider and higher production capability compared to the TR-24 cyclotron.

What is the difference between TR-Flex and TR-30 cyclotrons?

The TR-Flex is a compact, cost-efficient accelerator, offering extremely high production output at a fraction of the cost of the larger TR-30 cyclotron installations. The TR-30 is ACSI’s oldest, but still most powerful cyclotron. The TR-30 has an energy range of 15 MeV to 33 MeV and up to 1600 µA current.

How big is the TR-Flex cyclotron?

The TR-Flex cyclotron is the smallest (not superconducting) 30 MeV cyclotron ever built. Its magnet, 1.7m (L) x 1.7m (W) x 1.1m (H), has a footprint of a “PET cyclotron” and it weighs only 24 tons.

Which radionuclides can be produced on the TR-Flex cyclotron?

A full range of PET radioisotopes (F-18, N-13, C-11), including radiometals (Cu-64, Zr-89, Ga-68), can be produced on the TR-Flex. Higher energy allows direct production of O-15 water from regular O-16 water. Over 30 Gbq of O-15 water can be produced in a 5 minutes run.

The TR-Flex is uniquely suited for the production of a variety of SPECT and generator nuclides:  Tc-99m, Mo-99, Ge-68, I-123, Tl-201, In-111, Zn-67, etc.
